Diseases particularly the serious ones are said to part of the genetic disposition of people. This is true. Yet often, this scientific fact is used more as an excuse by some people to cover their own faults that led to their body disorders. The truth is that most illnesses arise due to neglect or to an unhealthy lifestyle. Hence, if you truly care for your body and life, you must strive to right what is wrong (if there is) in your habits. The following tips may be useful in your endeavor:
First, eat healthy foods. Vegetarian and fruit diets are encouraged for proper nutrition and avoidance of the build up of cholesterol in the blood vessels.
Second, have a regular exercise or engage into any other physical activity such as sports. These help you stretch out achieve a stronger and more fit body. Moreover, they help you sweat in order to release excess fats or any other toxin or unnecessary substance in your body. Then, they also enable you to relax and get rid of stress.
Third and last, get proper and enough sleep. As much as you work hard, you must also learn to give your body the rest it deserves.

The flu season is closing in again. Sure, there are no reports of flue outbreaks yet. However, it's better to be safe than sorry.
You should have gotten your flu shot by November or October. You may still get your late flu shots this month if you're one of the many people who hasn't seen his/her doctor.
Better hurry and get your shots injected. It seems like the flu outbreak will make itself felt the way it did last year -- sometime by February. Stocks of flu shots are actually being prepared by the CDC. Hopefully, these flu shots will be used in communities, which have a shortage for the mentioned vaccines.
Remember that the flu shots that you take by this time will still take effect for several months. It is best if you take vaccines against flu now since, the flu season is expected to have a late start. The flu season is estimated to last until March or April.

Hummmm...Hummmmm.... no im not singing, I'm meditating. Ya meditation is good and it will keep you stay healthy. Meditation is simply paying attention to an object that will help us further unfold the finer aspects of our own self. Technique in meditating is to concentrate, condense and compress your awareness to be totally focused on the very subtle object you are meditating on.After a few minutes, every stress and strain of your day will fall from your shoulders, and you will become mentally and physically rested and refreshed. Isn't that easy? That's the immediate result of your meditation. If you do this regularly you will get positive changes in your mental health as well as improvement in other areas. Just look at Rafiki of Lion King, doesn't he look peaceful?
Our nails do more than just stabilize the end of our toes and fingers, they also attest to our character as a person. We’ve all heard our mother’s admonition about long fingernails trapping dirt and germs under them. True enough, nails can be a barometer of a person’s health. Nutritional deficiencies show up in the nails as white discolorations or pits, as nails are chiefly made of protein. Spooned nails (nails that look scooped out), for example, may indicate iron deficiency. Brittle nails mean your body is not getting enough vitamin B1, while discolored nails suggest blood sugar trouble.
A healthy nail is smooth, pink and its white crescent moon near the cuticle should be of the right thickness. Trim your nails regularly, following the natural curve of your fingers. And lastly, go easy on the nail polish once in while to let your nails breathe.

The Olsen twins have all caught us by surprise--who could've predicted which Olsen would develop anorexia? Then charming Nicole Richie who used to shine with her sweet healthy cheeks next to her ultra-thin partner. If Mary-Kate and Nicole were among those teenagers who answered a set of questions developed by a group of UK researchers, then perhaps instead of going to the newsstand for this week's Yes, we'd head straight to the library for the latest issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Questionnaires, UK researchers have found out, are accurate diagnostic tolls when it comes to predicting the development of eating disorders in young women. The questionnaires are 70 percent accurate and could help cut the problem at the bud before it becomes a medical condition. Common to victims of eating disorders show greater sensitivity to the relation of food and body shape, preference for the feel of an "empty stomach," and eating by themselves.

How many times have we been to the doctor in the local hospital, had our infected or aching body part checked, took an examination, underwent a series of x-rays, and then waited forever for results? I have, for more than a couple of times. During the wait, it really makes me wonder as a patient how such supposedly customer-oriented institutions could miss out on technologies that could provide services and results as urgently as they are needed.
Well, amazingly, one hospital in Jacksonville, Florida has gone through the kind of transformation that surpasses even other known hospitals in a span of only some years. Can you believe that the doctors at the new institution in a rural area have gone wireless? It can be possible, indeed, and this case is proof that mobile and email technologies can be tremendously useful in following up on lab results, checking x-rays and updating a patient's chart, and ordering prescriptions. Now, how about other hospitals following in their footsteps?

A vitamin supplement taken by pregnant mothers can work wonders for the newborn baby. Taken with a proper dosage vitamin supplements are full of nutrients that will nourish a child even if he is still inside the womb. Many women will not take vitamin supplements because they taste bitter and are a pain to swallow.
If this is the case, then women must take the Prenatal Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Bar from Bright Beginnings. These supplements are like chocolate bars and are excellent even for nursing mothers. Women should drink a full glass of water when taking one bar per day (Note: only one bar per day, or as prescribed by the doctor). The downside is that it cannot be taken with any other kinds of supplement, perhaps because it already contains all the nutrients in one package. Do not take this as a substitute for real food, however.

When a disease is diagnosed, most people usually and immediatly ask the question, "why." Yet the truth is that almost all causes of serious illnesses point to one thing, a once unhealthy lifestyle.
Perhaps, you can take the opportunity at this moment to ask yourself about your habits. Why wait for a disease to develop? Now is the perfect time to evaluate and to start to right what needs to be corrected.
You may begin by taking a look at your diet. Are you eating nutritious and healthy food that can help prolong your life and prevent dieseases? Another one is your schedule for rest and sleeping. Always make sure that there is enough time for you to rest and relax your body in order to regain the strength and energy it lost during an entire day of work. Then, if you smoke or drink, you may as well think about lessening your vices or better yet quit them. Finally, try to engage into other physical activites such as a regular exercise and sports. They do not only make your body healthy and fit, but they also help you in overcoming stress and pressures.

There comes a point in time when some young children eat nonfood items. This disorder may last for a month or longer. This eating disorder is known as Pica.
To add to your vocabulary, Pica actually comes from the Latin word given for magpie. Magpies, as we all know, have large appetites. They eat just about anything.
Furthermore, Pica is common to children suffering from mental retardatio and autism. Some children aged 2-3 may also have this eating disorder. You may notice that some children between 18-24 months try to ingest nonfood items. This, however, doesn't mean that they have Pica.
Some non-food items that may be eaten by children with Pica include: cigarette ashes, hair, paper, baking soda, chalk, dirt, paper, clay, toothpaste, feces, etc.

Most women do not know that when they feel pain in the abdomen part or while urinating, they are already suffering from Urinary Tract Infection or UTI. I've had UTI once a year for almost 3 years now and I never learn. It's not easy to deal with this infection. You feel uneasy and irritable when you have UTI. I always feel the urge to pee every 5 minutes and when I am in the toilet, nothing comes out. Why did this happen? I do not drink water unless I have to take medicine. I control my pee and keep it for up to 3 hours. I pee on dirty toilets. I eat salty foods a lot. How about you? Are you like me too? Avoid getting UTI, start by drinking lots of water always remember that bacteria like concentrated urines so if you take lots of fluid they have a less chance of harming you. Pee when you have too and make sure that the toilets are clean. They are full of germs. Women have to know how to prevent themselves from getting this infection. It's not just for you but it will benefit your children and your partner too.

Erectile dysfunction has many causes, one of which is cardio-vascular disease. It is not hard to see why this is. Blood flow is necessary for an erection to occur, and when blood flow is compromised, a man's erectile capacity is also compromised. But we're talking about science here and not philosophy, and in Western medicine, more concrete evidence is needed to establish the link between cardio-vascular problems and a man's erection capacity.
The findings of an Austrian research team presented earlier this year at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association may just be that concrete proof. The research focuses on the presence of the amino acid homocysteine in the blood. High homocystein levels in the blood is a sign of heart disease. According to the research, two-thirds of the test subjects who have erectile dysfunction also had a high level of homocysteine in their blood.

Red meat (beef, specifically) doesn't have to be discarded from a teen's diet list. Teenagers are usually advised to eat only poultry and white meat as their protein supplement, believing that red beef only adds up to the caloric content of a meal, causing them to get fat. In fact, researchers from the American Dietetic Association have discovered that lean beef actually increased the amount of "heme" iron, which were nutrients readily available for bodily use. Low density lipo-protein was indeed decreased, as with the poultry diet, but unlike taking in the beef diet, it did not increase the usable iron in the body's system.
Teenagers are experiencing growth spurts--this should explain why they are in need of the ready iron. Teens who engage in sports should be more aware of the health benefits of lean beef and treat it as an essential part of their everyday diet too.

Depression is a mental health problem that the youth is continuously experiencing, especially adolescent women. Studies show that they are more likely to be depressed than other teenaged boys. Why do girls suffer more from depression?
As of yet there is still no certain answer as to why girls get more depressed than boys do, but medical experts say that puberty and changes in the hormones might be causing girls depression. When depression occurs, it is important to seek professional help or simply consult anyone who might be of any help in order to get rid of depression. The usual symptoms of depression that people should recognize are sudden changes in eating habits and sleep patterns, constant feeling of sadness, irritability, and suicidal thoughts or tendencies.

One of the most imperative changes that happen to mothers is their lifestyle. This includes the food that should be eaten and supplements that should be added to the system. Medically, a healthy mother would likely deliver healthy babies. Hence, mothers have to develop a regimen that will improve their health through proper food intake.
Dieting as a requirement for pregnant women has to be determined by doctors particularly dietricians. As a rule, agents normally taken by mothers like alcohol and nicotine should be avoided. Normal circumstances would suggest that healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables are the fundamental foods to be eaten. Furthermore, food supplements as prescribed by doctors should be added to the food to further boost the health of mothers and in effect improve the health of the babies in their wombs.

Holidays are occasions for fun and merriment. But for some people, the holidays are another round of allergy misery as a whole new batch of allergens are released into the air and in the foods served during the season. If you suffer from allergies, the Christmas season might just be a bit too intense for you.
Taking out the plastic tree and decorations from a year's worth of storage might trigger your dust or mold allergies, so better take extra precautions when decorating.
All that potpourri, scented candles and perfumes on sale at the local mall could trigger an attack so be careful when shopping.
Also, be aware of your food allergies when cooking that Christmas dinner. It might give you a nasty itch, rash or something much, much worse.

Many a bored adult has succumbed to the grips of Alzheimer's disease without knowing why. In fact our diet and lifestyle has played a role in the onset of this disease. If you believe in the concept of nature or nurture, then you will realize that not all that comes naturally to us should be embraced--although adult-oriented diseases such as Alzheimer's cannot be predetermined, it can always be considered a threat to our well-being and thus be prevented. Exercising both the body and the mind is the best measure.
Most adults think it's too late, having been used to sedentary lifestyle. By doing mental exercises you can promote healthy neurons which are the building blocks of a well-functioning brain. Exercising the body further removes the threat of many adult-related diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular ailments and arthritis. Some senior citizens have confessed that getting off the rocking chair and doing something active has changed their lives. Don't you just envy them?

Adolescence is a phase of curiosity and exploration. This is the moment when kids or teenagers thirst for more knowledge and adventure. They tend to try new things, go to many places, and reach out to other people.
Unfortunately, this learning period is also the time when they become more exposed to bad and negative influences and things such as alcoholism, drugs, and sex. Sad to say that many teenagers have already become victims of such things.
Teenagers are vulnerable. That is why parents should devote more time and attention to them. Parents should talk often with their kids in order to bring out and dicuss certain issues. Dialogues and constant advice can help a lot. By doing this, parents are able to show their children that they care. Parental love is still the strongest force in guiding and raising kids well.

Your teens may not directly tell you to leave them alone. However, you'll realize that is what they are implying if you read between the lines. They feel that they are of age already. They also feel that they can be truly independent. They do actually have a point here. Keep in mind, though, that you can still have plenty of authority over them. Subtlety should serve as the key.
Parents can remove junk foods out of the grocery list. Your teens won't be able to say that you are abusing them. They still have the freedom to spend their money on any food that they wish to consume. It will also be a good idea to have a stock of breakfast cereals, pretzels, bagels, etc. A plastic package of celery and carrot sticks with salad dips should also be found in your refrigerator. The kids will surely consume them if there are no potato chips in sight.
A jug of lemonade is healthier than consuming cola. Incidentally, several independent tests show that the teens will drink the lemonade instead of the cola if they see a pitcher containing the juice drink. Make sure that the refrigerator has a cold drink with more water than what is suggested on the label.
Lastly, parents can talk to their teens about their favorite athletes or stars. Inform the kids that nutrition plays a big part for staying healthy and beautiful.

Doctors are now determining if the Waist to Hip Ratios (WTHR) is a better way of predicting heart attacks than calculating a person's Body Mass Index (BMI). Although most medical practitioners agree that the BMI is a good indicator or predictor of possible heart attacks or disease, they are not accurate when other factors such as smoking, cholesterol and diabetes, among others, are taken into account.
Many doctors now believe that a good Waist to Hip Ratio is a better indicator of cardiac disease and that people who are apple-shaped (more abdominal fat) are at greater risk for this disease than pear-shaped (more lower body fat than abdominal) people.
A good ratio to maintain is that for women, the waist should be narrower for women, while for men, the waist should be narrower or the same as the waist.
