There is a thin (pun not intended) line between being considered overweight and obese. That line is a measurement of a person's Body Mass Index (BMI).The BMI approximates the amount of body fat a person has. It's not entirely reliable, though, as very muscular people and pregnant women often show high BMI's. A BMI of over 30 usually puts a person in the obese class. A person with a BMI of 25-29.9 is considered overweight. The BMI of a person is calculated by dividing the weight of a person in pounds by the square of his/her height in inches and multiplying the dividend by 704.5. The product is a person's BMI.
Obesity is now considered a disease, affecting a large number of Americans (64.5 %!). Those who suffer from it not only endure the debilitating physical effects of being obese, but also the societal stigma attached with being obese. It is classified as a chronic disease, and is also considered a genetic condition as well, aggravated by environmental factors like high-calorie food and lack of exercise.
While being overweight is just seen as a lack of self-discipline.
