Merck, among other colossal drug companies has developed a vaccine against the deadly rotavirus, but the vaccine is yet to be approved by the FDA next year. Merck officials are keen on the effects of the new drug since it could cost them some reputation boost if their vaccine succeeds, reversing the Vioxx fiasco.
Rotavirus kills children who are aged three and under. In 1999, a vaccine called Rotashield had caused uproar when twenty infants suffered from upset stomachs. It was immediately pulled off the market by Wyeth. Now, Merck and other drug companies are trying to come up with a cure for the
disease but the FDA was wary of the same side effects. Merck officials, however, are positive that during the first year the gastrointestinal illness will be alleviated by 74% and the total cure would amount to 98% consequently.
